What is Epiretinal Membrane?
Epiretinal Membrane is abnormal tissue (almost transparent membrane) which grows in the centre of the Retina, in the macula.
If the membrane contracts and creases, it causes a deformation and progressive distortion of the macula and has the consequent visual defects.

The Retina is the light sensitive tissue which lines the inside of the eye. It collects images which are subsequently sent to the Brain through the Optic Nerve for processing. It is like a canvas onto which images are projected, like in cinemas.
If any person suffers damage to this tissue, it may seriously affect their vision in a permanent and irreversible manner. That is why it is very important to detect its existence in time in order to prevent this damage to the greatest possible extent.
Symptoms of Epiretinal Membrane
Most forms of Epiretinal Membrane go unnoticed. The patient may notice blurred vision, a loss of definition or metamorphopsia (deformation of straight lines).
Diagnosis and Treatment
Normally an eye examination is performed by means of Optical Coherence Tomography. This is a simple and highly accurate test which allows the Ophthalmologist to rule out or detect the presence of the pathology with maximum efficiency.
A surgical procedure is used to treat the epiretinal membrane. A vitrectomy is performed and the layer of anomalous tissue which has grown in the centre of the retina is removed.
