What is Epiretinal Membrane?
Epiretinal Membrane is abnormal tissue (almost transparent membrane) which grows in the centre of the Retina, in the macula.
If the membrane contracts and creases, it causes a deformation and progressive distortion of the macula and has the consequent visual defects.

The Retina is the light sensitive tissue which lines the inside of the eye. It collects images which are subsequently sent to the Brain through the Optic Nerve for processing. It is like a canvas onto which images are projected, like in cinemas.

A surgical procedure is used to treat the epiretinal membrane. A vitrectomy is performed and the layer of anomalous tissue which has grown in the centre of the retina is removed.
