Presbyopia – Eye fatigue

Home » Presbyopia – Eye fatigue

What is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia, commonly known as “Eye fatigue”, is a refraction disorder which involves the loss of the focusing ability of the crystalline lens, i.e. the eye lens.

Ocular focus occurs because the crystalline lens “widens” or “flattens out” in the same way as a camera lens moves forwards or backwards to establish the correct focus.

The widening or flattening movement of the crystalline lens is made possible by the so-called Ciliary Muscle and also the elasticity of the crystalline lens.

From about the age of 40, both the Ciliary Muscle and the crystalline lens lose elasticity which means that visual focusing ability is reduced and “near” vision is fundamentally affected.

This is therefore a normal process associated with the passage of time by which everyone is affected sooner or later.

Following the operation, the use of glasses or contact lenses will be strictly confined to the past regardless of whether, in addition to Presbyopia, the patient suffered from any refraction defects such as Myopia, Hypermetropy or Astigmatism.

    Symptoms of Presbyopia

Routine activities such as reading become very difficult due to problems associated with Presbyopia. Generally, glasses must be worn, even by those who have never previously needed them in their lives.

    Diagnosis and Treatment

Besides the use of the usual “near vision” glasses or “progressive glasses” (by those who have already worn glasses due to other refraction defects), the way to treat this disorder, without having to resort to glasses, is surgical.

The procedure consists of implanting an intraocular lens which provides clear vision from any distance.

    Frequently asked questions about Presbyopia

Will I feel anything during the Presbyopia procedure?

No. On account of the anaesthetic drops that we apply, you will not feel anything during the procedure.

What kind of anaesthetic is applied to patients?

Just a few anaesthetic eye drops will be applied to the patient undergoing the Presbyopia procedure.

How long does the Presbyopia operation last?

The presbyopia operation is very short and barely lasts 15 minutes.

Do I have to be admitted to hospital for the presbyopia operation?

No. The presbyopia procedure takes place at a walk-in clinic: when it is done, the patient can make his/her own way home.

How long does the recovery process last?

The recovery of visual acuity is almost immediate and the patient can get back into a normal routine within a few hours of the presbyopia operation.
