What is Retinal Detachment?

One of the most serious ocular pathologies related to the Retina is Detachment.

Retinal detachment is a disease whereby the layers of the innermost area of the eye become separated.

It all starts with a tear which allows liquid to accumulate between its internal and external layers.

Using a comparison, the Retina would be the equivalent to the «film» of a camera, on which images are collected, which means that if the «film» is damaged, the images cannot be seen.

If the Retina is affected by any pathology, the visual information cannot be «interpreted» correctly by the brain and the vision of the affected eye will consequently be impaired and, in some cases, this may even lead to partial or total blindness.

There are several possible causes of Retinal Detachment. Some arise from particular pathologies, ocular or otherwise, such as, for instance, severe myopia or diabetes. Others are more accidental and trauma-based, such as a possible blow to the eyeball.

    Symptoms of Retinal Detachment

Most patients begin to see shadows or moving black spots («floaters»), sometimes accompanied by flashes of light, or a black background or curtain. If the disease is not treated in time, the spots will spread and may even turn into dark areas which prevent normal vision of the image.

    Diagnosis and Treatment

Whenever the patient notices any of the aforementioned symptoms, he/she should visit the ophthalmologist so that the presence of any tear can be detected or ruled out.

Surgery is always used to treat Retinal Detachment. Furthermore, the procedure should be performed at the earliest possible time.

Up to the time of the procedure, the patient is advised to rest and maintain a certain posture to prevent any further damage to the retina.

The most usual surgical technique involves the removal of the Vitreous Body and relocation of the Retina (Vitrectomy). In the post-operative period, the patient must adopt a strict posture and rest for the best possible visual recovery.
